Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born on Jan. 31, 1919 in Chairo, Georgia. Jackie was born into a family with 1 sister, and 3 brothers. He was raised in a poverty stricken environment, and lived small apartment where his mother raised 5 children by herself. He attended John Muir High School where he was a four sport stand out: basketball, track, baseball, and football, and later continued his athletics at the higher level.
College Life
After High School Jackie attended Pasadena Junior College and continued to be a four sport phenom. He was named the regions MVP for baseball in 1938. He then looked further and took a step up and attended UCLA. Hear is where he became the University's first student to collect 4 varsity letters in school history. During his senior he was forced to leave UCLA due to Financial Reasons.
Military Life
After leaving UCLA Robinson continued to pursue his athletic career playing semi-pro Football for the Honolulu Bears. However his season was ended sooner than expected because he was called by the draft for WWII. From the years 1942-1944 Robinson served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. He did not in fact see combat for that matter, he was arrested during boot camp in Fort Hood, TX for refusing to give up his seat and move to the back on a Segregated Bus. Through the efforts of the public eye for injustice, along with many black newspapers and the NAACP Robinson was eventually acquitted of all charges and received a Honorable Discharge from the US Army.
